How to Maintain Good Oral Hygiene While in Treatment?

Maintaining good oral hygiene Our teeth differ in shape and size. These characteristics allow them to perform different functions. For example, teeth help us to break food into smaller particles so we can digest more comfortably. They also help us in pronouncing different words or sounds more clearly. Teeth give shape to our face and create better self-confidence. To get the best possible benefits from your teeth, it is important to give them the best care on a regular basis. Effective orthodontic treatment and a beautiful smile is the result of a joint effort between you and your orthodontist. When you have braces, it is necessary that you clean your teeth regularly and maintain optimum dental hygiene.

Without good oral hygiene a yellowish tint will start to develop on our teeth, known as bio-film. A bio-film is any group of micro-organisms in which cells stick together like a unit; this behavior causes a build-up of harmful bacteria. Their unrestrained growth can lead to cavities and gum infection. With orthodontic braces, it becomes more tedious to perform oral cleanliness but definitely not impossible! It will take a little extra effort and time on your part to keep your teeth clean.

Brushing your teeth

How to do it?

  • Eat healthy and avoid eating unhealthy snacks in between regular meals. Also, avoid food with a high content of carbohydrates. By doing so, your teeth can restrain the growth of bacteria. If possible, try to control your consumption of sodas or energy drinks that can cause acidity and long-term damage.
  • Although it is a lengthier chore to brush your teeth while wearing braces, it’s still a necessary to do so. You can use a soft, multi-tufted toothbrush. Begin by holding the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle, and then slowly brush the area between your gum and braces, maintaining the same direction. Repeat the gesture for every tooth.
  •  Proper flossing while wearing braces can be hard but not impossible. In place of floss picks, you can use a floss threader or a waterpik to take out food particles stuck between your teeth. Speak to your local Orthodontist for a full length version of these instructions.
*Make sure to visit your dentist on a regular basis to keep track of your oral health and hygiene.
