Your First Halloween With Braces

It’s that time of year again. Yes, it’s National Orthodontic Month. A time when we all put on our costumes and . . . oh, right, wrong holiday. Of course, it’s Halloween. Perhaps this is your first Halloween wearing braces. It can all be a bit overwhelming. We are here to help you through the decision-making process of what you can and cannot eat this holiday.

Check your bag. Did you get any gummy, sticky, chewy candy? Are there any Laffy Taffy, Skittles, jelly beans, Tootsie rolls, Gobstoppers, or Twizzlers? How about chocolate bars with nuts? Put those aside into the “do not eat” pile. Candies like these can bend wires, break brackets and other parts of your braces.

So what treats are safe? Suck on a lollipop, dip apple pieces in caramel, or even better, eat chocolate to your heart’s content. (Just make sure they don’t contain nuts or crunchy pieces inside, and as always, brush your teeth thoroughly). Hershey bars, Hershey kisses, Dove bars, Kit Kat, Reece’s Peanut Butter Cups and Three Musketeers are all great options.

What do you do with that “do not eat” pile we mentioned earlier? We are proud to participate in Operation Gratitude which sends your unwanted candy to deserving deployed soldiers. You can even attach a little note if you wish. We will collect candy until November 12th. Please contact our office for more details.
